High Energy Muon Momentum Estimation from Multiple Coulomb Scattering in Dense Detectors
نویسنده
چکیده
A method is described for estimating muon track momentum from the distribution of hits along tracks in dense calorimeters due to multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS). The method requires only well-aligned conventional drift chambers or similar tracking devices and can be implemented with or without a magnetic field present. Neutrino experiments can use this technique to increase acceptance for large angle charged-current scattering events. Resolutions in a typical detector geometry vary from ∼ 10% at p = 20 GeV/c to ∼ 50% for p = 500 GeV/c, if the number of hits on the track is sufficient.

Information Extraction from Muon Radiography Data
Scattering muon radiography was proposed recently as a technique of detection and 3-d imaging for dense high-Z objects . High-energy cosmic ray muons are deflected in matter in the process of multiple Coulomb scattering . By measuring the deflection angles we are able to reconstruct the configuration of high-Z material in the object . We discuss the methods for information extraction from muon ...
متن کاملUse of Coulomb scattering for determining neutrino energies with MACRO
An estimate of the energy of neutrino-induced muons in MACRO is provided by a multiple Coulomb scattering measurement. The MACRO original upward-muon data sample has been subdivided according to the reconstructed muon energy. Data in each subset are then compared with expected fluxes from atmospheric neutrinos. The results are interpreted in terms of neutrino oscillations.
متن کاملCompositeness Test at the FMC with Bhabha Scattering
It is possible that quarks and/or leptons have substructure that will become manifest at high energies. Here we investigate the limits on the muon compositeness scale that could be obtained at the First Muon Collider using Bhabha scattering. We study this limit as a function of the collider energy and the angular cut imposed by the detector capability.
متن کاملMeasurement of Through-Going Particle Momentum By Means Of Multiple Scattering With The ICARUS T600 TPC
The ICARUS collaboration has demonstrated, following the operation of a 600 ton (T600) detector at shallow depth, that the technique based on liquid Argon TPCs is now mature. The study of rare events, not contemplated in the Standard Model, can greatly benefit from the use of this kind of detectors. In particular, a deeper understanding of atmospheric neutrino properties will be obtained thanks...
متن کاملAtmospheric Neutrino Oscillations in Macro
In this paper we first give a short overview of the MACRO detector which was operational at the Gran Sasso Laboratory from 1989 till the end of 2000. Then we present and discuss the results on atmospheric muon neutrino oscillations, concerning medium (∼ 4 GeV) and high (∼ 50 GeV) energy data. Using the Multiple Coulomb Scattering of muons inside the lower part of the detector, estimates of neut...
